In The Trades Spotlight: Q&A with Mark Williams, Mark D. Williams Custom Homes Inc.

Q: What do you love most about your role in construction?
A: I love meeting new people and creating a custom home that fits their family needs/goals through creative design. It’s a joyful process and while it’s not without challenges the rewarding payoff on move in day is truly special! Also, all the trade partner relationships we create and extend to our clients make it a very bonding experience for both parties.

Q: After high school, what did you do for a career?
A: I started as a teenage sweeping and cleaning up home construction sites.

Q: What made you decide to get into the building industry?
A: I was looking for something that was rewarding, creative and would give a sense of accomplishment. I designed a home and built it for sale in 2005 and haven’t looked back since!

Q: When you graduated from high school, what did you want to do for a career?
A: I went to college and knew I wanted to pursue something in sales and marketing on a cooperate level most likely. Graduating, I was in sales for a year and loved it, but realized I needed to do something on my own that was more challenging and fulfilling.

Q: Outside of work, what hobbies do you have?
A: LOTS!!!! I’m very active and it helps me stay focused actually on my job. I play tennis, weight lift, running, basketball, hockey, triathlons, adventure racing and skiing. I also love to travel and look forward to doing more of that as my kids get older.

Q: How do you help grow the industry?
A: I mentor a business group at Minnetonka High School once a year as we do a 3-month business study together.
